Use of U.S. assault weapons
The attorney general also suggested that re-instituting a U.S. ban on the sale of assault weapons would help reduce the bloodshed in Mexico, where last year 6,000 people were killed in drug-related violence.
U.S. officials have a responsibility to make sure Mexican police "are not fighting substantial numbers of weapons, or fighting against AK-47s or other similar kinds of weapons that have been flowing to Mexico," Holder said.
Unfortunately, alot of people, TOO MANY people will believe this BULLSHIT.
Let's try to inject a bit of logic into this.
So, let's see. Why would Mexican drug cartels, financed by drug money, be using semi-automatic AKs from the US, when they could get REAL selective-fire AK-47 assault rifles on the open market?
I got these figures from Amnesty International:
http://www.amnesty.org.uk/news_details.asp?NewsID=16998
* An AK-47 can be bought for as little as US$30 in parts of Africa.
* There are an estimated 100 million AK-47s in the world.
* AK-47s are found in the state arsenal of at least 82 countries.
* The AK outstrips its nearest rival, the M-16 assault rifle, by 10 to 1 in terms of numbers produced.
* The AK-47 can be fired at a rate of 600 bullets per minute.
* It is estimated that 50 to 60 per cent of weapons used in the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are AK-47s or its derivatives.
* The Kalashnikov has been produced in at least 14 countries, across four continents.
